If you want to catch literally every pokemon youll need to travel the world...but you can catch a massive variety from just your neighborhood or even just your own home/property. Pokestops are not a necessity, and gyms are also not a necessity.
For your BS information; few kids knows about doing that GPS spoofing method, and not all adults are tech savvy to set it up for their kids. And if the method needs rooted phone, not everyone's device are. While you had and was able to do that to play and gained the comfort of just sitting down playing which is envying. I got it (app from this topic) working without doing that trick and played the proper way - walking/travelling around the neighbourhood and town, which is what the app was made for. This app is suppose to be use outdoor not for people with heavy butt glued to their couch. And I said town or city, not state.
Anyway, that aside since I'm here not to debate;
The app recognised POI around my neighbourhood and town despite not being the region where it was released for. It's not even showing on my play store account. I personally tested it on the streets with a bike. Even the in-game map changes to fit mine base on what it is from possibly Google Map source, which was a pleasant surprise. Got 1st pokemon from inside my home, and the next few was a short distance from my house - while another across a busy street intersection, etc. As for pokemarts, they are at specific POI locations around town whose pictures and names are indicated when the blue icon is tapped, which the closest for me by actual distance - 500m (measured in a straight line) or a good several blocks away from my starting point. And again, I've accessed it at the indicated location. The rest of the marts and gym are 1-3km away by actual distance, this I know from the POI names of the places in town indicated by the info in the blue icon. Which I refrain from going since I'd literally have to ride through busy roads and risk getting run over by vehicles. It's not a safe town to ride bikes long distance, we've no bike lanes or side walks.
Without doing or knowing what you did, and having to play the normal way; Is it for kids? Maybe, but not without adult supervision tagging along in the hunt. For those whose kids want to play this game without supervision or anyone tagging along with them, it's advisable to do what you did as that way kid won't need to leave the safety of home. Although that's as good as missing the point of why this app was made so.
For those of you who thinks this game is really safe for kids to play and venture without escort or supervision, read this;

It's not worth the risk. Reports are piling over kids and teens getting injured all over the region release since this game was beta released. Adults are even playing this while driving around town hunting these monsters, disregarding theirs and others safety.
By the way, there's a downfall to using the GPS Spoofing method. Apparently GameFreak built into the app the ability to identify if a person is walking or riding a vehicle or stationary. It calculates how long or how much time was spent in between registered GPS stations/coordinate. This especially true in regard to Poke Eggs. Unless you guys physically walk (long distance), the egg won't hatch. I'm not sure yet about pokemons sent to train at gyms, if it is also effected by the GPS counter or not.
